Type of account and investment

  • Individual stocks: You’ll typically pay a per-trade commission of $5 to $10. Some brokerages, such as Interactive Brokers and TradeStation, also offer per-share pricing.

  • Options: Options trades often incur the stock trade commission plus a per-contract fee, which usually runs $0.15 to $1.50. Some brokers charge only a commission or only a contract fee.

  • Mutual funds: Some brokers charge a fee to purchase mutual funds and index funds (a passively managed mutual fund that tracks an index, like the S&P 500). You can limit mutual fund transaction costs or avoid them completely by selecting a broker that offers no-transaction-fee mutual funds. (Mutual funds also carry internal fees called expense ratios. These are charged not by the broker, but by the fund itself. You can keep these costs down by investing in index funds or ETFs, which tend to have lower expense ratios than mutual funds.)

  • ETFs: A type of index fund, exchange-traded funds trade like a stock and are purchased for a share price. ETFs have lower expense ratios, as noted above, but are often subject to the broker’s stock commission. However, many brokers also offer a list of commission-free ETFs. If you plan to invest in ETFs, you should look for one of these brokers.

  • Bonds: You can purchase bond mutual funds and ETFs at no charge by using no-transaction-fee mutual funds and commission-free ETFs. Brokers may charge a fee to purchase individual bonds, with a minimum and maximum charge.

Foreign Exchange Market

Foreign exchange market is the market in which participants are able to buy, sell, exchange and speculate on currencies. Foreign exchange markets are made up of banks, commercial companies, central banks, investment management firms, hedge funds, and retail forex brokers and investors. The forex market is considered the largest financial market in the world.

Forex or currency trading

Forex, FX or currency trading, is a decentralized global market where all the world's currencies trade. The forex market is the largest, most variable market in the world with average traded values that can be trillions of dollars per day.

basic forex terminology:

  • The type of currency you are spending, or getting rid of, is the base currency. The currency that you are purchasing is called quote currency. In forex trading, you sell one currency to purchase another.

  • The exchange rate tells you how much you have to spend in quote currency to purchase base currency.

  • A long position means that you want to buy the base currency and sell the quote currency.

  • A short position means that you want to buy quote currency and sell base currency.

  • The bid price is the price at which your broker is willing to buy base currency in exchange for quote currency. The bid is the best price at which you are willing to sell your quote currency on the market.

  • The ask price, or the offer price, is the price at which your broker will sell base currency in exchange for quote currency.

  • A spread is the difference between the bid price and the ask price.

Type of orders

  • Market orders: With a market order, you instruct your broker to execute your buy/sell at the current market rate.

  • Limit orders: These orders instruct your broker to execute a trade at a specific price. For instance, you can buy currency when it reaches a certain price or sell currency if it lowers to a particular price.

  • Stop orders: A stop order is a choice to buy currency above the current market price (in anticipation that its value will increase) or to sell currency below the current market price to cut your losses.
